The Northwest Cooperative Development Center and the Washington Small Business Development Center are teaming up to provide two webinars on how to start a homecare cooperative. Through education in the cooperative business model and by highlighting the success of the four Washington homecare care co-ops, the webinars will provide local caregivers with information to consider in forming their own caregiver cooperative.

What’s New in Eldercare? Homecare Co-ops!

The cooperative business model offers a new way for caregivers to work in eldercare – in agencies they own themselves.  As members of a democratic workplace, caregivers make decision together and have a say in how their co-op operates.  In this webinar we will look at how homecare co-ops benefit the caregivers, the clients and the community.

Join Deborah Craig from the Northwest Cooperative Development Center and caregivers from Circle of Life Caregiver Co-op (Bellingham, WA); Capital Homecare Co-op (Olympia, WA) and Ridgeline Homecare Co-op (Port Angeles, WA) and learn how, together, we can start a homecare co-op in your community!

(Webinar 2 is October 26 Homecare Co-Ops: The ‘Start Up’ Plan https://wsbdc.ecenterdirect.com/events/99271241)

With a rapidly aging population, the US is experiencing a high demand for caregivers, especially in-home caregivers, who make it possible for people who are elderly or disabled to stay safely in their homes. And while the homecare industry, plagued by high turnover and low wages, struggles to hire the caregivers to meet the demand, a new kind of homecare agency is finding success in Western Washington – Homecare Co-ops.  Owned and governed by the caregivers, licensed by the Washington Department of Health, homecare co-ops provide quality care while paying caregivers a living wage.  As business owners, caregivers learn skills in finances, marketing, strategic planning and group decision making while governing their homecare agency, making it more than just another caregiver job.
