Unveiling Authenticity: A Conversation with Dr. Jen Thomas, Founder of Chameleon O’Clock
This past week, we had the honor of chatting with Dr. Jen Thomas, the owner and mastermind of Chameleon O’Clock, LLC. With over two decades of experience in healthcare, academia, leadership, and as a devoted military spouse and mother of five, Dr. Thomas brings to light the intricate journey of self-discovery and empowerment amid life-changing transitions.
Embarkation of Chameleon O’Clock
In the summer of 2023, Dr. Thomas embarked on a transformative journey with the launch of Chameleon O’Clock, as well as her book, “It’s Time for You To Shine: A Story of Finding Strength in the Midst of Anxiety and Fear.”
The genesis of the name “Chameleon O’Clock” traces back to a poignant encounter during her study on military child development. Moved by a young boy’s struggle to express his true self, Dr. Thomas recognized the universal truth that many of us conceal our authenticity until we feel a sense of security.
“He told me that he ‘felt like a social chameleon and really had to wait until he felt safe to show his true colors,” says Dr. Thomas. “And this is what I decided to showcase in my business: This is life… We must hold true to the fact that many times when we are going through transition or an identity crisis, we are constantly suppressing who we are as a sense of safety, and it’s so important to stay true to who you really are.”
Thus, Chameleon O’Clock was born, with a mission to empower individuals and organizations to embrace their true colors unapologetically.
Navigating the Journey
Heading down the entrepreneurial path, Dr. Thomas sought guidance from Ashley Whitley, Program Manager of the Washington Center for Women in Business (WCWB). With Whitley’s mentorship and support, Dr. Thomas found the confidence to translate her vision into reality.
“Ashley has been my go-to… She was such a great mentor. I struggled with trying to find my target audience, but she really helped me understand that piece and after a long time, I finally found my niche and she’s been an amazing support for me.”
Dr. Thomas emphasized the pivotal guidance that WCWB provided through invaluable resources and a supportive community, enabling Dr. Thomas to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship with resilience and determination.
Balancing Motherhood and Entrepreneurship
Navigating the dual roles of motherhood and entrepreneurship, Dr. Thomas finds fulfillment in intertwining her personal and professional life.
“[Having my own business] has had great impacts. I have five children, my oldest is 20 and in college at United States Military Academy at West Point, 2 sophomores, an 8th grader and a 6th grader. While I was trying to find my niche, I realized just how much I surrounded myself with other parents and youth and how many folks had reached out to me to thank me for great parenting advice. Now my kids get to see me in Mom life and in work life due to me working with organizations that my kids are involved in.”
Empowering Through Collaboration
As an advocate for women’s empowerment, Dr. Thomas is set to be a featured speaker at the upcoming INSPIRE Women’s Business Conference on May 23, 2024.
“I am so excited to listen to the other speakers, participate in some of the breakout sessions, and just go around and celebrate the amazing businesses that are going to be there.”
As Dr. Thomas continues to chart her course with Chameleon O’Clock, she invites individuals to embrace their authenticity and live life on their own terms. Whether through coaching sessions, speaking engagements, or community outreach, she remains committed to empowering others to unleash their true potential.
