Celebrating the Legacy of Fathers and Multi-Generational Businesses in Thurston County
As Father’s Day approaches, I reflect on the legacy of families in our region. Thurston County’s economy is bolstered by multi-generational businesses that provide stability and continuity. Notable examples include Sunset Air (Fluetsch family), Harbor Foods (Erickson family), The Rants Group (Rants family), Kaufman Construction & Development (Kaufman family), Casa Mia restaurants (Knudson family), and Hometown Property Management (Barkis family).
The Rants Group, founded by Ron Rants, has seen leadership transitions from Ron to his son Pat, and now to Pat’s daughter, Danielle. Pat emphasized how the values and professional ethics Ron established have been upheld and continued by Danielle. This commitment to sustaining these values impacts the business and strengthens community leadership, ensuring that the legacy of significant regional impact is carried forward for future generations.
In discussing the transition of Casa Mia restaurants with Bob Knudson, who is passing his business to his son, Chris, Bob highlighted the deep respect and history underpinning a successful transition. Chris referred to his father as a “cherished advisor,” noting that this philosophy goes beyond a simple transaction and transfer of ownership. It is deeply rooted in respect, the history of operating a successful enterprise, and understanding the legacy and leadership required to create a business supported by the community.
Our goal with the EDC and the CB & I is to ensure that all businesses in Thurston County have access to strategic planning and support, including the tools needed to create a generational business. As we continue to explore opportunities that impact our economy, I want to thank my father for instilling in me the importance of service. I now recognize that Thurston County’s economy is unique, with a deep roster of multi-generational legacy companies guided by “cherished advisors” who provide lessons and encourage leadership, consistency, community service, and business excellence.
Happy Father’s Day!
