Embracing Hemp Innovation for Construction
The future of construction holds immense potential for driving our community forward, particularly from a perspective of innovation and economic growth. At the Thurston Economic Development Council and Center for Business & Innovation (CBI), we are committed to fostering an environment where new ideas can flourish, and nowhere is this more evident than in the construction sector. New technologies and sustainable materials are revolutionizing the way we build, leading to new ways to enhance our infrastructure while promoting economic resilience.
Green construction practices and the implementation of industrial hemp is an exciting development in this arena. It is clear that adopting sustainable materials and energy-efficient designs will not only reduce our environmental footprint but also create jobs and stimulate local economies, according to First Citizens Bank Relationship Manager & Hemp Specialist, and CBI Board Member, Matthew Klifman.
“The opportunities for industrial hemp are countless, from growers to manufacturers to retailers,” he shared. “Traditional building materials can take up to 70 years from plant to harvest, but hemp takes just 6 months. The materials are diverse and innovative, while also providing fire resistance and long-term carbon capture.” This rapid production cycle and the environmental benefits of hemp make it a win-win for economic development and sustainability.
These advancements are crucial as we work towards a more inclusive economy, ensuring that all members of our community have access to the benefits of this progress. As we look to the future, let us embrace these innovations with enthusiasm and collaboration to build a more sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous community. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our shared mission.
