Fostering an Inclusive Environment Where Everyone Can Thrive

by Michael Cade
As we commemorate Juneteenth, a significant milestone in our nation’s history, we are reminded of the ongoing journey toward economic equity and justice. This context underlines the importance of our commitment at the Thurston EDC and the Center for Business & Innovation to foster an inclusive environment where all entrepreneurs can thrive.
Key to this effort is Mayra Pena’s BIPOC Business & Community Liaison role. Mayra ensures our resources are accessible to previously excluded businesses and individuals and provides valuable feedback to enhance our inclusivity strategies.
From Mayra Pena:
Each time I talk with a small business owner I am inspired by their resilience, vision and passion. As the BIPOC Business Community Liaison, I am grateful for the opportunity to do this work with our communities and further the goal of ensuring equitable access to business resources.
One of the significant milestones of this position was my establishment of a BIPOC Business Task Force. This group met monthly to evaluate the needs of the underserved business community and identify gaps in business support and resources. Additionally, this Task Force developed proactive solutions aimed at stimulating economic equity and advancement.
Operating under the BIPOC Initiative’s directives and with the recommendations from the BIPOC Business Task Force, I have actively worked as an advocate to connect BIPOC, minority businesses, and aspiring entrepreneurs to the resources that are available at the EDC’s Center for Business & Innovation, including the Washington Center for Women in Business (WCWB), and other regional resources, along with helping to create pathways to opportunities needed by entrepreneurs for success.
Our clients say it best!
“You and the EDC team gave me the courage to go forward through these difficult times. I can’t and won’t forget you and the EDC team’s grace.” – Clean N’ Fix
“Many Thanks to Thurston EDC and community partners for giving small local family-owned businesses the help we need to continue operating.” – Zinagros Espresso
As we reflect on Juneteenth’s significance and celebrate our strides, let us also renew our commitment to forging a future where every entrepreneur, regardless of background, can succeed.
