From DJ to Filmmaker: How EDC Helped Shape a Local Business Owner’s Dream
Misael ‘Misa’ Martínez Melo owns MediaRoom in Olympia and has been a fixture in the local media scene since moving to Thurston County in 2012. He began his career while completing college in 1995 and established his media production business in Puerto Rico in 2007. After several years of working remotely, he relocated his business to Olympia in 2017 to minimize travel and concentrate on local expansion.
In 2019, seeking to enhance his business knowledge and network, Martinez enrolled in the Economic Development Council (EDC)’s ScaleUp classes. These classes introduced him to crucial business concepts and networking opportunities that proved transformative.”
It was a revelation,” he recalls, “I saw the light through the coaching and interaction with peers.”
The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges as demand for event filming declined. Thankfully, the EDC facilitated access to federal and state aid, allowing Martinez to pivot towards online content and set up a new studio. This support was crucial for sustaining his business during uncertain times.
Reflecting on his entrepreneurial journey, which began at the tender age of 15 as a DJ, he shares a critical piece of advice for up-and-comers: “Don’t make the mistake of going at it alone. While you don’t necessarily need business partners, having a support ecosystem is crucial.” For him, the EDC became that vital support network, offering resources that were instrumental in his growth.
Currently participating in the EDC’s APEX program, Martinez is optimistic about further growth and grateful for the resources that have helped shape his success. Learn more about Martinez and MediaRoom here.
