Innovation at the Core: Thriving Business Landscape in Thurston County

Innovation can be defined as the process of bringing about new ideas, methods, products, services, or solutions that have a significant positive impact and value. Our Center for Business & Innovation has worked with over 2,500 businesses during the past year, assisted in the launching of over 75 new businesses, and helped businesses secure over 25 new patents.
Historically, our region has been somewhat immune to economic downturns and recessions. However, the local economy has structurally changed in the past 20 years, with private sector businesses becoming more predominant in the economic landscape. Employment in the private sector has increased at more than double the rate of public sector employment.
The state, as an employer, coupled with the significant impact of Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), has supported the region in many ways. These two entities provide numerous employment opportunities for our citizens and attract new employers and contractors seeking unique business development opportunities.
The expansion of the private sector is built upon innovation and entrepreneurship. We see business models across all sectors adapting to market forces and creating new products for old markets or old products for new markets. One example is found within the arts, culture, and heritage sector. Recently, I reached out to Debra VanTuinen to discuss the foundational decisions that led to establishing her art gallery in the Views on Fifth building in downtown Olympia and to explore the innovative strategic process that ensured her beautiful art became a driver in our local economy.
“The Views on Fifth live-work concept was very attractive, and I could see this working for other artists. My vision was and still is to attract other small businesses and artists to show in these small businesses and attract clients during Arts Walk, Studio Tour, and other community events throughout the year. This energy emerges through a vibrant collaboration.” – Debra VanTuinen
Her establishment of a studio was central to showcasing the return on investment in the neighborhood, attracting new partners, patrons, and other like-minded business leaders. It is partnering with businesses like The Views on Fifth, as well as relationships with the state and JBLM, that support evidence of innovation thriving right here in Thurston County.
Onward!
