Port of Olympia and Lacey MakerSpace Forge Strategic Partnership to Fuel Innovation, Workforce Development, and Regional Growth
Olympia, WA — The Port of Olympia has solidified a strategic partnership with Lacey MakerSpace, a dynamic hub of innovation, education, and entrepreneurship in Thurston County. This collaboration marks a significant investment in the South Sound’s economic future, advancing shared goals of workforce development, small business support, and community prosperity.
Founded through a visionary collaboration between Saint Martin’s University, the City of Lacey, and the Thurston Economic Development Council (EDC) and its Center for Business & Innovation (CBI), Lacey MakerSpace is a cornerstone of the region’s innovation ecosystem. The 8,000 square foot facility provides access to high-tech tools, expert training, and business resources that help makers, entrepreneurs, and small manufacturers bring ideas to life.
“The Port of Olympia is proud to partner with Lacey MakerSpace to build a stronger, more resilient economy,” said Mike Reid, Director of Community and Economic Development at the Port of Olympia. “This partnership supports our mission to create economic opportunity by investing in local talent and innovation—and ensuring that Thurston County remains competitive in an evolving global economy.”
With deep ties to the Thurston EDC and CBI, Lacey MakerSpace is more than just a workshop—it’s a launchpad. Members can access business advising, technical assistance, and startup resources through the CBI, creating a seamless pipeline from creative idea to thriving enterprise. From one-on-one mentorship to prototyping and production, the entire ecosystem is designed to turn curiosity and craftsmanship into viable business ventures.
“We’re thrilled to partner with the Port of Olympia to expand opportunities for local entrepreneurs, students, and job seekers,” said Michelle Pope, Director of Lacey MakerSpace. “Together, we’re building a connected, inclusive space where innovation meets economic empowerment.”
The partnership also opens doors for real-world career pathways tied to Port-related industries. With aligned goals around workforce development, the collaboration will explore internships, job shadowing, and training that link local talent to maritime, logistics, and advanced manufacturing opportunities.
By working together, the Port of Olympia and Lacey MakerSpace—alongside the Thurston EDC and CBI—are investing in the next generation of problem-solvers, creators, and business leaders, while ensuring Thurston County continues to thrive.
