Thurston County: A Beacon of Economic Success Supported by National Recognition

by Michael Cade, Executive Director, Thurston Economic Development Council

Thurston County: A Beacon of Economic Success Supported by National Recognition

In an era where economic prowess defines the trajectory of communities, Thurston County emerges as a beacon of success, validated not just by local sentiment but by esteemed national research. National economic researchers have begun to recognize what Thurston County residents have known for years – that this region is an exceptional place to work and live. Recent reports from the Chmura Economics & Analytics team and the Milken Institute have confirmed Thurston County’s position among the top 10 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) in the nation in terms of economic health. This recognition not only affirms our local pride but also sheds light on the remarkable achievements and potential of our community.

Thurston County’s success story is multifaceted, rooted in its vibrant high-tech industry, supportive business environment, and engaged community. While we may not always think of ourselves as a “tier 1 city” like New York City, Austin, or Boston, the data is beginning to tell a different story, showcasing our national significance and economic strength.

Delving into the findings of the Milken Institute’s “2024 Best Performing Cities” report reveals an extraordinary aspect of Thurston County’s economic landscape: its high-tech industry growth. From 2017 to 2022, Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater witnessed the fastest high-tech GDP growth in the nation. The city’s exceptional performance in software publishing, data processing, and technical consulting industries underscores its status as a dynamic hub for innovation and entrepreneurship.

Companies like Diamond Technology Innovations (dti™), the global leader in waterjet orifice manufacturing for waterjet cutting and cleaning industries, exemplify the spirit of innovation and economic vitality within Thurston County. Perry Hanchey, DTI Inside, expresses gratitude for the region’s support, saying, “We feel privileged to contribute to the economic vitality within this region. Our company supports a strong market which is both domestic and international. From our operational platform in Thurston County, we are able to produce, innovate, retain our team, and expand, in a local environment which is supportive. This allows us to continue our market development successfully.”

The Thurston Economic Development Council (EDC) and Center for Business and Innovation (CB&I) have played a pivotal role in fostering economic growth and prosperity in the region. Their dedication and strategic initiatives have resulted in a remarkable 48x economic multiplier this year, reflecting the tangible impact of their work on the local community.

Thurston County’s economic success is further bolstered by its rich educational offerings. With institutions like The Evergreen State College, Saint Martin’s University, and South Puget Sound Community College, we have access to a forward-thinking and skilled workforce poised to drive our high-tech sector forward in new and exciting directions.

As Thurston County continues to garner national recognition for its economic achievements, it is imperative that we capitalize on this momentum to further enhance our community’s prosperity. Whether you’re a business owner, entrepreneur, student, or resident, there are numerous opportunities to contribute to and benefit from Thurston County’s thriving economy. Get involved, stay informed, and join us in shaping a brighter future for Thurston County. Together, we can continue to build upon our successes and create a more resilient and prosperous community for generations to come.
