Economic Development Heroes – STEDI
This week marks Economic Development Week, a time to honor the individuals and organizations dedicated to fostering a vibrant and inclusive economy. At its core, economic development stems from the ancient concept of “taking care of one’s home.” It is about caring for our communities, and throughout Thurston County, we have many heroes committed to nurturing our region’s prosperity by supporting its entrepreneurs, employers, towns, cities, ports, and more to make communities strong and livable.
In 2012, the EDC Board launched the South Thurston Economic Development Initiative (STEDI) to broaden economic opportunities. This initiative united partners from diverse sectors, including the Thurston Regional Planning Council, Visitors Convention Bureau, Thurston County, and multiple cities, towns, and native tribes. Their shared aim: combine resources and expertise to drive growth, sustainability, and collaboration.
The communities of Tenino, Rainier and Bucoda have shown significant increases in retail sales over the last 10 years in part by the effectiveness of the STEDI program and its ability to drive new economic activity into these communities.
Today, over 24 county and regional organizations convene monthly to share resources, forge partnerships, and advance our regional economy. George Sharp, the Rural Programs Manager of the EDC, plays a pivotal role in driving STEDI’s agenda forward. In his work, George provides direct support and leadership to over 10 ongoing projects and programs – all designed to drive new and ongoing commerce into the South Sound region. STEDI has been impactful – and the successes include:
- Bringing in over $7 million in grants to small businesses and non-profits since 2020
- Supporting the generation of more than $450,000 in sales at holiday markets
- Securing grants to launch the Creative Arts District of Tenino
And many, many more.
George, along with many volunteers and partners that participate in STEDI are economic development difference makers. While the work is never truly finished, we stand ready to embrace the challenges ahead, united in our commitment to fostering a prosperous future for all.
